Juice Fast #2, Day 4 = GLORIOUS!!!!

Standard

Well, I wish I could tell you how hard this was and how awful I felt but I can’t.  I’m on day 4 and on top of the world!  I’m for sure going to go 7 days but hope to go at least 10.  I am thinking the reason this fast is going so well is because my body is already used to the wonderful nutrients of fruits and vegetables.  I must, however, admit from Thanksgiving until our cruise to the Bahamas last week I did eat a LOT of stuff I haven’t been eating over the past several months.  I began to feel very tired every day and I had several headaches as a result of this.  I haven’t had 1 headache since I started my fast.  That right there tells me what we put into our bodies is a big factor of how we feel.  I however, do not regret eating the bad stuff.  🙂  The Holidays are once a year and cruises to the Bahamas don’t come around every day so I ate what I wanted to eat.  It’s funny though how the weight I did gain on the cruise has already been lost.  I guess my body is adjusted to fruits and veggies!!  And now that I’m back into my routine it’s like I didn’t skip a beat.

One of the reasons this fast has gone so smoothly is that I’m keeping it very basic this time.  I’ve had the same fruit juice every morning which was, 1 green apple, 1 orange, 2 slices of pineapple and 5 strawberries. I then had the same juice for lunch and dinner which was 2 stalks of kale, 2 cups spinach, 1 lemon, 2 stalks celery, 1 cucumber, and 1 1/2 green apples.  You can use red apple if you like a sweeter taste.  I think a reason why last time was so difficult was because I would just throw different fruits and vegetables in the juicer and sometimes they would taste good and sometimes they wouldn’t.  They key is finding a juice you like and sticking to it!  It’s made things so much easier this time.

Another thing I credit the success of this juice fast to the fact that it was started on a Friday as opposed to a Monday.  When I started my last juice fast it was on a Monday and that was very difficult.  The first few days are the hardest and it made such a difference being able to be at home.  I could juice when I needed to juice, drink water when I needed water, and also watch a TON of movies to keep my mind off everything.  It’s very hard to focus those first few days so if you are home you can keep yourself somewhat busy.  When you are at work, it’s hard to concentrate and you begin to hate everyone around you.  Especially if they are eating food!  LOL!!!

My final reason for this juice fast going so well is, I had a buddy 🙂  Adam was my buddy last time and one of my best friends Leslie was my buddy this time.  Adam didn’t go on a 2nd juice fast this time due to the fact that the boy NEEDS to eat!  He got a little too skinny from the last fast.  He has now doubled up his portions of trail mix and avocados and is doing great!  Leslie has wanted to try the fast for a while so she packed up and stayed with me for the entire weekend.  It was great having her around to take our minds off things and to also have someone to converse with that is going through the same things.  She did AMAZING her first 4 days and she’s still going strong.  Leslie was smart and started to juice every morning (sometimes lunch) 2 weeks prior to our fast.  She also ate a TON of fruits and veggies those 2 weeks before.  What a difference that makes!  Her body transitioned very well into the juice fast and we both really only had a little bit of irritability on the 2nd day.  Other than that, neither of us had any complaints.

I’ll be sure to blog again when I’m officially done with my fast.  I just wanted to update you all!  I’ve had SEVERAL people call me and email me that they bought a juicer and are juicing!  This makes me so happy.  You are truly saving your lives!!  Have a great week and talk to you all in a few days!!Image

Traveling & The Holidays…..Ay, Yai, Yai, Yai…….

Standard

Long time no talk!!  I must admit the Holidays are getting the best of me.  Traveling, family, friends, shopping, parties, programs, food, the list goes on and on!!  🙂

Well, I’m here to help you be strong during this crazy and yummy good food/bad food time.  I honestly don’t want to tell you to stay away from all the goodness that comes with traveling and Holidays.  I do however want to tell you about the options you can have to help you not gain all that weight that you worked so hard to lose and to keep that body healthy.

1.  PACK YOUR JUICER!  Adam and I just got back from Nebraska and we packed our juicer with us.  It was so nice having it there.  We woke up Thanksgiving Day and made a wonderful fruit juice not just for us but for our entire family.  Juicers aren’t any more difficult to pack than a nice big pair of boots so load them up!!!  It’s nice to be able to start every day away from home on the same foot as you do when you are back home.

2.  SNACKS!  I made sure on this 12 hour road trip that we had plenty of snacks for us so we wouldn’t be tempted to get something bad at a gas station.  I LOVE Trader Joe’s fruit snacks and their Raw Trail mix.  It was nice to have those on hand when we got a little bit hungry.  I even brought bananas, oranges and apples.   And it’s not “cheating” if you  get an organic cacao (at least 75%) chocolate bar and sneak a little bit of that as well.  They are so yummy and all the antioxidants are great for you too!!

3.  SUBWAY!  **SINGING** Subway, eat fresh!  Sorry, I can’t help but sing the song every time I type it.  We stopped at Subway several times throughout our week back home and we always get the wheat sandwich with all the veggies loaded on it.  NO CHEESE and I like to flavor it with sweet onion and mustard sauces.  Mmmmmmmmm GOOD!!!!  Most Subways and gas stations also brew their own tea so I made sure I brought my Stevia packets with me to sweeten it up a bit.  Stay AWAY from the pink stuff!  Sweet N Low is SOOOOO bad for you!

4.  ORDER HEALTHY!  If you go out to a restaurant, order red wine and try and find a  healthy option.  I’m finding that more and more restaurants do have Vegetarian or Vegan options.  And if they don’t just get something healthy.  I rarely ever order what is on the menu anymore.  A lot of times I just tell the server what I want and they make it.  It’s GREAT!

5.  EXERCISE!  Take work out clothes with you and go on walks with your family.  Some of the best conversations I’ve ever had in my life were with friends or family members on a long walk.  Make some memories and be healthy all at the same time.

6.  HAVE FUN!  I don’t ever want you to not eat Grandma’s pumpkin pie, or your Uncle’s famous deep fried turkey.  I want you to be happy and have fun!  Of course when I was back home I cheated.  I cheated more than once.  But as long as I was doing all the other good things when I could, it all balanced out.  Somehow, I LOST a pound going home for Thanksgiving!  It’s so important not to just eat bad all day because you cheated.  We need to get out of that mind set.  Stay positive and think healthy when you can.

Yes, it’s the Holidays and you have traditions, and you want to have fun…..so do it!!!  Just don’t do it all day long.  Remember this is a way of life.  Go head and have those cookies that Mom makes every year for Santa.  Eat that prime rib you have been craving!!  Just make sure when you wake up Christmas morning you surprise everyone with a wonderful Juice to start the day right.

Stay Juicy!

The Best Hangover Of My Life!

Standard

Where do I begin?  How I felt….ahhh…….the roller coaster ride of the juice fast.  There is really no way for me to sugar coat this.  The first three days are AWFUL!!!  For 3 days straight I felt like I had the worst hangover of my life.  I didn’t even want to drink my juices at night.  Adam had to make me drink my juice at one point!  It was all I could do to even look at it.  I remember laying on the couch of night 3 asking Adam “Why did we do this and will we ever feel good again?”  My head was spinning, my body was aching, and it was literally all I could do to not throw up.  I was definitely going through food withdrawal.  Bad food withdrawal.  I wasn’t sick because I was starving, but because my body was being shocked by all the healthy nutrients.  Adam was definitely my rock through this whole thing and it made it so much easier that he did it with me and felt hungover too.  I think it’s very important that you have a spouse, a friend, or a family member that you do the fast with.  And if you don’t, you can always call me and I will be your coach!  🙂  Actually you BETTER call me and I will help you through it.  It’s nice having someone help you that’s felt what you are feeling  to pull you through.

What’s crazy about those first 3 days, is I couldn’t get over the fact that my body felt so horrible due to me putting healthy things in it.  I was shocked that I thought if I could just eat a piece of pizza I would feel so much better.  Which, was true and WRONG!!!!!!!!!  That was when I knew I was addicted to food.  Bad food!  All through my first three days I kept thinking of Joe and Phil and how they did the fast for 60 days.  I knew if they could do it for 60 I could do it for 10.  I even watched the film a few more times during those first few days to motivate me even more.  It was also at this point I realized I was in a battle with my mind, not just my body.

Once day 4 came around…Holy Moly Hallelujah!!!  It was like I was a new person.  My energy level was through the roof.  I felt amazing!!  Even my skin color was glowing.  I was  beyond excited to drink juice again and it was on that day that I knew I never wanted to eat bad food again.  I began craving tomatoes and spinach.  WHAT???  Yes, I was craving them!  When is the last time you have ever craved tomatoes and spinach.  Every fruit and vegetable I saw looked bigger, better, and brighter.  I also realized I was just one day away from half way.  I knew then and there I could do this!  And I would do it.

Every day got easier and easier to do this fast.  I felt lighter, happier, more focused, more alert, more rested,  more at peace, and more engergized than I had felt in years.  I will be honest with you from a woman’s point of view, once day 8 hit I was getting a little bored with the juices.  Us ladies like to have options.  BUT, that was only 2 days away from my goal so I continued to stay motivated.  I would definitely put up a calendar in your kitchen that you can see every day and cross off the dates of the fast.  That was always nice and inspriring to see.

10 days straight I had 3 to 4 juices a day ranging from 20-32 oz at a time.  There are a lot of calories in fresh natural juice so I never ever felt hungry believe it or not!!  Not once did I ever feel starved!

I always started every morning with strictly all fruit juice.  I made sure it always had an orange and a green apple and then I would just throw whatever else I wanted in with it.  A lot of times I would even take my juice and add it to a banana in a blender.  That was SUPER yummy!  The nice thing about fruit juices is you can just throw whatever you want together.  Peaches, Pineapple, and Strawberries are always great to add because they make the juice super frothy and thick.  You really don’t have to make sure you have exact measurements of each fruit either.  In fact, I found with fruit juice, the more, the better!!!

Now to the Veggie Juices!!!  For my lunch and dinner juices I always made sure 1 green apple was in the mix.  Then from there you want it to be more vegetable heavy.  Spinach, cucuber, celery, sweet potatoes, kale, carrots, tomatoes, ginger, lemon, cilantro, and even avocado (must be used in a blender as you can’t juice an avocado) etc.  Basically you are the chef and you decide what you want to throw together.  There are a ton of juice recipes out there and believe me I tried several of them and still do.  It actually became a lot of fun experimenting with my own different combinations.  Some were great and some were so bad I couldn’t even get my dog to drink them.  Ha!  You quickly learn what works well together and what doesn’t.  Adam always had a rule for the vegetables juices he made, NO MORE THAN 2 VEGGIES and 1 GREEN APPLE.  That seemed to work pretty well.  I however, would sometimes throw anything and everything together and that works well if you only put in a small amount of each vegetable.  Those recipes are out there for a reason.  So use them first, then get creative!!

On days when I was really active during my fast I would come home and make myself an 8-10 oz fruit juice.  It was just enough to give me a little pick me up.  I would not recommend having a large fruit juice though towards the end of the day because even though it’s all natural, it’s still a lot of sugar.  I now alternate fruit juices and the glowing green juice every morning and it starts my day off perfect!  I feel completely energized and don’t even think about coffee anymore.  The juice gives me all the energy I need to have a great day!

So, there you have it!  10 days later I had lost 17 pounds and haven’t and won’t see those pounds ever again.  10 days totally changed my cravings and readjusted my tastebuds.  10 days out of my life was worth it to me.  Is it worth it to you?  And when you are on day 3 asking yourself “Why am I doing this?” just remember once you get to day 4 you too will realized you just had the best hangover of your life!!

Super #3

Standard

The word of the day is DIGESTION!  Actually, that should be the word of the day every day.  My Super #3 for your new lifestyle change is purchasing Kimberly Snyder’s The Beauty Detox Solution book and reading it over and over and over again.  Kimberly is amazing and I found myself loving everything she had to say.  She helped explain to me how important digestion is to have a healthy body.  Not only is her book super informative, it’s very fun and entertaining as well.  A few things that really stuck with me was her explainination of  eating light to heavy, the difficulties of eating meat and dairy,  and most importantly food pairing.

Eating light to heavy is something I never thought I would do.  I was always taught that breakfast should be the “biggest” meal of the day and that dinner should be your smallest.   I ate that way  for years and worked out at the gym every single day and still didn’t lose weight or feel healthy.  Kimberly finally helped things click in my brain.  I was pairing all my foods the wrong way.  Fruits, vegetables, starches, and proteins, all digest at different rates in our body.  That is a fact and there is no way around it.  So when I thought I was eating healthy by having my yogurt and turkey bacon for breakfast, a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread and baked chips for lunch, then chicken on whole grain rice with vegetables and fruit for desert for dinner….boy was I WRONG!!!!  I was piling food on top of food in my body and I wasn’t really getting any of the healthy nutrients.

So now, I make sure I have a juice for breakfast.  Doing this makes sure my body get the nutrients asap!  It starts my day off feeling great and energized.  I used to drink 3 cups of coffee a day and now I drink ZERO!!  I haven’t needed it.  However, don’t hold it against me though if I splurge a little this Holiday Season and I get me a Pumpkin Spice Latte….made with soy of course.  🙂

I then always make sure I have a fresh spinach and mixed greens salad for lunch paired with whatever leftovers I had from the night before.  I usually make enough for dinner that there is always the perfect amount of leftovers for Adam and I the next day.  I try to always eat my salad first as that is going to digest faster than the entree.  Who knew after all these years of going to restaurants there really is a reason as to why we get our salads first.  I thought it was just to keep us busy ’till our dinners came.  🙂

Now, if I’m going to have sprouted grains or proteins, I make sure I have the large majority of them at night.  In fact, Adam and I go through one whole loaf of Ezekiel bread a week.  We also eat a ton of beans and nuts.  If I’m hungry after dinner I don’t even think twice about having a slice of Ezekiel bread with some almond butter.  YUMMY!!!  Or a good handful of trail mix.  The key here is that your body has enough time to digest everything.  So if you are going to eat meat, or heavier food items eat them at night so your body will have all night to digest it.  It takes at least 4 sometime more hours for meat to digest in our bodies.  If you start your day off with meat, and then pile more meat on throughout the day all you are doing is piling sludge on top of sludge.

Fruit is also something Kimberly is very passionate about.  She insists YOU MUST EAT FRUIT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH!!!!  I started do this right after my juice fast and what a difference even that makes.  I would always eat fruit for desert.  I love frozen gapes and would eat them after dinner all the time.  It takes only about 25 minutes for fruit to digest through our system.  If you eat fruit for desert it’s going to just sit on top of everything else you ate and turn to sludge.  You won’t even get any of the beneficial nutrional value out of it.  So eat fruit first, then veggies, then entree.  Something this simple has changed my body completely!!!!!

Well, no surprise to a lot of you, but I used to be a HUGE meat eater!  Heck, Adam and I make Barbeque!!  I never in a million years thought I would eat meat only once or twice a week and I’m here to tell you it’s true!  I feel way to good and you know that whole “oh my gosh, I feel so sick and bloated because I ate to much feeling” has completely disappeared.  I have yet to feel that way eating like this.  I know I feel so good right  now  because my food is digesting properly.

Kimberly explains that meat and dairy are very difficult for your body to digest.  Whether you believe meat and dairy are good for you or not, it doesn’t change the fact that “it is what it is”, and our bodies always have and always will have a hard time breaking them down.  I completely cut out dairy and maybe 2-3 times a month I have meat (seafood, turkey, or chicken).  I now use almond milk and almond cheese and it’s SO good!!  And if and when on a cheat night I do eat dairy or meat I make sure it’s as natural as possible.  Like all natural goat cheese instead of Kraft singles.   Dairy is very, very hard for our body to digest.  Plus, Kimberly points out that we are the only creatures that continue to drink milk after infancy.  And on top of that, it’s milk from another creature!  COWS!!  Who decided that???  Once she pointed that out it had me wondering, why do we drink milk from cows?  And how does it “do a body good”?  You get just as much if not more calcium from fruits and vegetables.  Why do I need to go drink milk from  a cow to have a healthy body?  I’ve been more healthy NOT having dairy.

I never in a million years thought I would not be a 24/7 meat eater but boy am I glad I read Kimberly’s reasoning behind eating meat.  The strongest animals on the planet are Gorilla’s and they eat a fruit, vegetable, and nut based diet.  So the whole “you need meat to be strong” doesn’t really hold any true value.  You get a TON of protein  from vegetables, beans, and nuts.  She explains how our body is designed compared to other animals and how man started eating meat years and years ago.   Yet, when he did, eat he had to hunt for it and it would sometimes be days or weeks before he got to eat meat again.  Therefor his body had time to work it off and digest it.  I know I was guilty and I’m sure several of you are too but I ate meat at every single meal!!!!!!!!  And my weight gain and awful skin color pictures go to show that wasn’t working out for me.  I’m not saying you shouldn’t eat meat, or that meat is even bad for you, I’m just saying once I cut back on eating so much of it I started to feel a ton better and look a lot better as well.

The final important thing for me that Kimberly touched on was food pairings.  She says:

Starches DO mix with vegetables

Proteins DO mix with vegetables

Proteins and starches DO NOT mix

Different starches DO mix

Different proteins DO NOT mix

Fats DO NOT mix well with protein, pair moderately

Fats DO mix with starches

Fruits should be eaten on an empty stomach

Fruit DOES mix with raw greens (exept melons)

I try my best to follow this and always think about my food pairing.  She goes on to explain in her book specific good and bad food pairing combinations.  She also maps out a list of what is considered to be a starch, protein, and fat.

Digestion!  That is one of the biggest keys to looking and feeling good.  So think about that next time you order surf and turf served over wild rice with a side of mashed potatoes and cheesy garlic bread.  That’s going to become your new best friend as it sits in your digestive tract for the next several hours, days, weeks, months, years……..Instead, order a side salad first, then get some grilled chicken with steamed broccoli.  Or better yet, ask them if they have any vegan dishes.  There is an awesome vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Nashville called the Wild Cow.  They are amazing and their sweet potato tacos are to die for!!!!  Their vegan queso and raw tiramisu cake is pretty exceptional as well.

Remember, I’m not here to tell you what is right or wrong.  I’m just here to tell you what I’ve gathered and show you what is working for me.  I also will say that there are some things in her book I don’t 100% agree with either.  So that’s why it’s important for you to take this book and pull from it what will work best for you and your family.  Kimberly has hundreds of more things she talks about in her book and I know there will be many you can relate to as well.  I really hope you take the time to order it and read it from start to finish at least 10 times.  That is only because every time I read it I find something new!  HA!

Please check out her blog www.kimberlysnyder.net.  She has amazing updates weekly and you can also get more information on her book or you can also order it through amazon.

Tip of the day…….

Today, try and eat light to heavy.  I know, I know,  it goes against everything we’ve ever been taught but start your day out with a JUICE perhaps for breakfast, have a nice full salad for lunch, then have a heavier dinner where you can add proteins and carbs if you want.  My Super #3 which is Kimberly Snyder’s book The Beauty Detox Solution is all about digestion.  I truly believe all my weight loss and why I feel so good right now is due to how my body is digesting the food I am putting into it.  I will explain my little secrets in my next post and will also tell you why I feel Kimberly’s book is a crucial step to looking and feeling good!

Hopefully if you are reading this you have already watched the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead!  And if you haven’t yet, why not?!  🙂  If you did see it, in the movie they use a Breville juicer.  Now, I was sure that a juicer that was used in such a huge film was going to cost an arm and a leg………oh how I was wrong.  The Breville Juice Fountain Plus costs $150.00.  I’ve spent 10 times the amount of that on other diets, trainers, gyms, etc… I’ve also seen a lot of juicers and used other juicers and no other juicer compares to this one.  The amount of juice you get is incomparable to other juicers.  Sure, you can get another juicer but it’s not going to give you nearly as much juice and it won’t be as easy to assemble or clean.  So, you are going to not only pay twice as much at the store for produce but you will also spend twice as much cleaning it.  Not to mention you can put the WHOLE apple right in the juicer!  That alone is worth it!  The Breville is super easy to clean and I can usually make Adam and I a juice every morning from start to finish in about 15 minutes.  That’s from cutting the fruit to cleaning the juicer.  You can’t even cook bacon, eggs, and toast in that amount of time!!  So Super #2 is to get yourself a juicer!  It will be the BEST investment you have ever made.  We ordered ours through Best Buy and I know they are also available at Macy’s as well.  If for some reason they are not there, just go directly to the Breville website.

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.  THAT is the documentary that changed my life.  My boyfriend and I are huge documentary buffs.  We love our Netflix and we love to watch anything and everything.  So one Saturday night we turned on Netflix and up popped the title Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.  My first thought was, hmmmmm that’s exactly how I feel right now!  My second thought was, hmmmmm Netflix said we would give it 5 stars.  My third thought was, we are watching this!!!

Now, I hate to confess this but I actually fell asleep the first time I watched it!  HA!  However, anyone that knows me knows I am early to bed and early to rise so this is really was no surprise.  I didn’t fall asleep because it was boring or non-informative, but because we watched it so late.  10pm is my bedtime (Yes, even on a Saturday night sometimes) so if a movie is started any time after that then good luck getting me to watch it!  Luckily, that next day Adam (my boyfriend) came to me and said we are buying a juicer today.  I’m not going to lie, I was a little thrown off at first but I am used to his crazy ideas so I said sure, a juicer sounds great!!  He also told me I was going to re-watch the documentary and I will then understand why we were getting a juicer.  So, that Sunday afternoon I sat down and watched the entire thing.  I was blown away!!!!  It finally hit me that this wasn’t about passing or failing anymore.  Or if I could or couldn’t do it.   It was about life and death.  And I was becoming closer to death than I was to life.  And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid to fail.  I had been struggling for so many years with so many other diets that I failed over and over again.  But this wasn’t a diet.  This was a way of LIFE!!  It all made perfect sense.   I literally got up from my couch, got into the car, and we went to Macy’s to buy a Breville juicer.  A Breville juicer is the same kind that was used in the documentary.  Once we got to Macy’s they were SOLD OUT!  In fact, every Macy’s was sold out.  So, we quickly went home and ordered one through Best Buy and it was the last one they had.  SCORE!!  That’s when we knew we weren’t the only ones sitting at home watching Netflix documentaries.  Something big was going on, and we wanted to be a part of it.

Joe Cross, the Australian writer, director, producer, and star in the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead has CHANGED the world.  He is a true disciple transforming people all over the place.  His story told through this documentary is nothing short of amazing and it is down right miraculous.  I was completely obsessed with him!  The crazy thing is, the best part of the movie doesn’t even happen until it’s at least half way through.  Half way through you meet Phil Staples.  An extremely unheatlhy, unhappy, overweight truck driver from Iowa.  There was something about the combination of his courage, faith, determination, and knowledge that struck a huge chord in my soul.  I knew at that very moment I was meant to see this movie.  I also  knew from that very moment that juicing was going to be a huge part of my everyday life and my future.

I could easily sit here and tell you about the documentary but that isn’t going to do you, me, Joe or Phil any good.  🙂   If you really want to change your lifestyle and be healthy and fit once and for all,  the very FIRST step you need to take is watch this documentary.  Right now they are having several screenings throughout the United States.  You can go to www.fatsickandnearlydead.com  to watch the trailer and to see screening dates and locations.  You can also watch it just like Adam and I did through Netflix.  They have it on instant watch and on DVD.  However, there is a pretty long wait for the DVD.

Just the fact that you took the time to read this first post means you are ready or at the least, curious to take the first step to a new and better you.  I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.  And let me tell you, every time I watch it I notice something I missed the time before.  Once you watch it, share it with your friends, your neighbors, and your family.  Once you have watched it we can go to the next step which is talking about buying a juicer!  Trust me, it will be the BEST money you have ever spent and I can’t wait to share my next secret with you.  Until then…….

Stay Juicy,

Stacy
